Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about this head unit
Connect the single RCA cable with the yellow plug (included in your package) to extend your Bluetooth signal. This cable doubles as both a camera input AND a Bluetooth/WiFi antenna extension. The two small blue wires attached are antenna boosters that significantly improve connection stability. This simple connection takes 30 seconds and resolves 90% of Bluetooth issues. Make sure it's firmly connected even if you're not using a rear camera.
Try these proven solutions:
1. Quick Fix: Settings → Apps → Z-Link → Disable → Enable → Open (repeat each use)
2. Check Cables: Use the data/charge USB cable (not charge-only)
3. Bluetooth Setting: Disconnect all other Bluetooth connections - CarPlay needs exclusive access
4. Factory Reset Z-Link: Find the pink 'RESET' app, restart, reconnect Bluetooth, then try Z-Link
5. Sound Issues: Switch audio source to 'AUX' or 'USB/AUX' in your vehicle menu
Most issues are resolved with step 1 or 3!
The processor differs between models: The 2/32GB has a 4-Core processor, while 4/64GB and 8/128GB models feature the powerful 8-Core Cortex-A55 processor. Combined with RAM differences: The 2/32GB model with its 4-Core processor and limited RAM may experience slowdowns with heavy multitasking. The 4/64GB with 8-Core provides smooth performance for most users - no lag, seamless app switching, and enough storage for maps and music. The 8/128GB with 8-Core offers maximum performance with its generous RAM allowing unlimited multitasking and massive storage for extensive media libraries. Think of RAM like your desk space - more RAM means you can have more apps open simultaneously without slowing down.
Absolutely normal! These head units are complete replacement systems with their own GPS antenna, microphone, and Bluetooth module. Your factory connectors for these features won't be needed anymore. The important connections are: main power harness, speaker outputs, and the yellow RCA cable (even if not using a camera - it extends Bluetooth range). Any leftover factory plugs can be safely tucked away. If you're unsure about any connection, our support team is here 7 days a week.
Z-Link updates are handled through system firmware updates. Go to Settings → System → System Update. If an update is available, download it to a USB drive (FAT32 format) and install. Important: Never download Z-Link APKs from unofficial sources - they won't work and may cause issues. If you're having compatibility issues with newer iOS versions, the disable/enable workaround (Settings → Apps → Z-Link) usually resolves them while waiting for official updates.
Consider your usage:
• 2/32GB (4-Core): Budget option - fine for basic use, but may lag with multiple apps due to 4-Core processor and limited RAM
• 4/64GB (8-Core): Sweet spot - smooth Android Auto/CarPlay, multitasking, and ample storage
• 8/128GB (8-Core): Premium choice - unlimited multitasking, massive storage, future-proof for years
Most customers choose 4/64GB for the perfect balance of performance and value. The extra RAM makes a huge difference in daily smoothness!
The yellow RCA cable's blue antenna wires also boost WiFi signal! Make sure this cable is connected. Additionally, try these tips: Position the blue antenna wires away from metal surfaces, check that your phone's hotspot is set to 2.4GHz (not 5GHz) for better range, and ensure the head unit's WiFi sleep policy is set to 'Never' in Settings → WiFi → Advanced. For best performance with wireless CarPlay, keep your phone within 1-2 meters of the head unit.
Go to Settings → Sound → Equalizer and adjust to your preference. For more volume, increase the 'Loudness' setting. The 4/64GB and 8/128GB models have superior audio chips that provide cleaner, louder sound. If you have an amplifier, use the RCA outputs for best quality. Also check Settings → Factory Settings (password usually 126) → Audio settings for additional gain controls. Remember: higher-spec models (4GB+) include premium audio components for noticeably better sound.

Historical Context and Evolution of the Mazda CX-5:
First Generation KE (2012-2017):
Mazda first introduced the CX-5 in the 2012 model year as the spirited successor to its Tribute SUV, ushering in the brand's fresh "KODO: Soul of Motion" design philosophy along with the innovative SkyActiv Technology platform. The 2012 CX-5 marked a transformative step for Mazda, being the first vehicle in the Mazda lineup to holistically employ the full gamut of SkyActiv principles, encompassing engine, chassis, transmission, and body development. The objective was clear—achieving enhanced efficiency, reduced emissions, and improved dynamic performance in harmony.
During these inaugural years, the CX-5 solidified its position as an attractive blend of compact dimensions, functional interior packaging, lively driving responsiveness, and advanced fuel-saving plans. Available engine options—a lively 2.0-liter SkyActiv-G gasoline engine and later an even more potent 2.5-liter SkyActiv-G unit—quickly became recognized for their balance of efficiency and robust yet smooth acceleration.
Following substantial initial success, Mazda implemented refined updates and introduced notable enhancements midway through the first generation's lifecycle, particularly visible in the 2015–2017 restyling.
Mazda CX-5 Mid-Generation Refresh (2015-2017):
The model refresh beginning in 2015 introduced meaningful improvements in exterior refinement, interior quality, and driving comforts. Exterior updates included revised front-end styling characterized by an upgraded grille design, LED lighting elements available on higher trims, and detailed enhancements accentuating sophistication and visual appeal. Cabin refinements elevated quality with more comfortable seating, improved interior materials, better sound insulation ensuring quieter ride quality, and enhanced infotainment offerings. Mechanical enhancements led to smoother drivability, responsive steering, improved ride handling thanks to refined suspension tuning, and better cabin noise isolation, particularly at highway speeds.
Distinctive across this refreshed lineup was Mazda's intuitive MZD Connect infotainment interface, bringing user-friendly features and sensible conveniences to drivers and passengers alike. Yet, despite providing Bluetooth and USB connectivity, factory infotainment configurations during this period lacked Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration—a notable omission given rising consumer preferences for smartphone-connected driving experience.
Integration of Brummstadt's Premium Head Unit:
Acknowledging this limitation, Brummstadt presents a thoughtfully designed aftermarket head unit specifically suitable for the Mazda CX-5's dashboard architecture, offering owners broad and versatile connectivity options. Their solution directly addresses earlier limitations by incorporating sophisticated, user-friendly smartphone integration. Wired and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility highlight a feature-rich infotainment upgrade, now bringing intuitive smartphone functionality right into the Mazda's elegant interior.
The modern unit smoothly accommodates popular navigation services—such as Google Maps, WAZE, and Apple Maps—enabling easy, dependable journey planning. Picture a scenario: after a comfortable meal spent enjoying an evening out with family, the driver's smartphone conveniently displays a custom destination map to visit a friend. Automatically transferring this navigation from phone directly to the Brummstadt head unit screen via wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto ensures an uncomplicated, enjoyable departure—fully prepared and without distraction.
Beyond navigation ease, additional valuable features highlight the unit's versatility and practicality. An optional upgrade includes comprehensive front and rear 1080p HD cameras, markedly notably enhancing safety and giving peace of mind through detailed, recorded footage during commutes and journeys alike. Uniquely, the system also supports interactive passenger-focused entertainment—a family can enjoy multiplayer gaming via integrated USB ports, turning routine travel into genuinely enjoyable, shared times.
Further enriching owner experience comes through intelligent voice control technology. Aside from standard telephone and media commands, the advanced voice assistants—like Apple's Siri and Google's Assistant—permit direct communication with smart devices situated at home. With seamless voice integration, conveniently turning home lights or other connected systems on before arrival simplifies life's detailed daily routines by effortlessly extending connected lifestyle benefits.
Advantages and Driving Experience:
The Mazda CX-5 models spanning the 2015–2017 refresh have earned accolades and buyer loyalty largely by bringing engaging driving dynamics together with urban practicality. Owners universally appreciate Mazda's precise, responsive handling, paired harmoniously with thoughtfully tuned suspension for comfortable yet athletic driving characteristics. The interior genuinely creates an atmosphere of quiet quality, underscored by intuitive control placement, appealing interior materials, and pleasing ergonomics.
Beautifully preserving Mazda's carefully crafted driving ambiance while simultaneously complementing it with contemporary connectivity and technological usability, the installation of Brummstadt's compatible head unit substantially broadens functionality. Owners now easily harness updated wireless smartphone integrations and comprehensive digital navigation choices, making journeys both thoroughly accessible and genuinely enjoyable. Safety improvements with enhanced camera visibility, family-oriented entertainment options, and fully integrated voice coordination with home systems collectively transform daily driving significantly—deepening engagement and significantly increasing overall driving satisfaction.
Within the broad scope of Mazda's automotive journey and the revered CX-5 lineage specifically, the 2015–2017 CX-5 series distinctly represents purposeful refinement in design, technological advancement, and sophisticated driving experience—making the selection of bespoke technological improvements both a sensible decision and a rewarding personal investment in long-term automotive enjoyment.
