RAM and storage on your Brummstadt unit

Video, 8:45. Four steps, each one also written out below.

Know what the two numbers mean, pick the version that suits the way you drive, and keep your unit quick.

Time
About nine minutes to watch, and a minute on your unit to check your own numbers.
Have ready
Before you buy: your car's page, which shows the versions it offers. On your unit: ignition on.
Screens can look different
Not every Brummstadt unit looks the same, so go by the names, like Settings, About car device, RAM and storage.
How to watch
Watch the video once, then start again and follow along.

Step by step

The same steps as the video. Each one plays from its own spot.

RAM and storage in pictures

Play from 1:04

Picture a desk with a cupboard beside it.

  1. The top of the desk is RAM: whatever's out right now. The map, the music, the call, the camera.
  2. The cupboard is storage: installed apps, saved maps and your music. It keeps them even when the unit is off.
  3. A bigger desk means more jobs out at once, and a bigger cupboard holds more. But one doesn't make the other bigger. They do different jobs.
  4. When the desk is full, nothing breaks. The unit puts a job away and brings it back when you need it. You might notice a short pause. A bigger desk means fewer pauses.
  5. Another example: in the kitchen, the bench is RAM, what you're cooking with right now, and the pantry is storage.
  6. On your car's page, the first number is RAM and the second is storage. 4GB / 64GB means 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.
  7. CarPlay and Android Auto run off your phone, and their downloads stay on the phone. But the unit runs the picture and the wireless link in its own RAM, and apps installed on the unit live in its storage.

Which version suits you

Play from 2:43

Your car's page shows which versions it offers. Start with what you use, not with the numbers.

Everyday CarPlay: to work, the shops and home

  1. All you want is CarPlay with maps, music and calls? Then 2GB / 64GB does the job today. Your phone does the work, and the unit shows it, wired or wireless.
  2. Think a little ahead: new apps come along, and what you need can change. If you'd rather not outgrow it, the next step up gives you room to grow.
  3. Every version has a reversing camera input.

Cameras and extras: the tradie

Play from 3:41
  1. Front and rear cameras, a dash cam, maybe an amp for the music: those extras start at 4GB / 64GB.
  2. You also get twice the RAM, split screen and a SIM slot. The SIM card isn't included.
  3. The page marks 4GB / 64GB as Recommended. It's the best balance for most drivers.

Weekends away and the Big Lap

Play from 4:13
  1. Camping on the coast, a bit of fishing, offline maps for the tracks and a good playlist at camp: 8GB / 128GB. Twice the RAM and twice the storage of 4GB / 64GB, so maps, music and apps on the unit all have room.
  2. Months around Australia with a camper, out where the phone has no signal, with maps for the whole country and your whole music collection on the unit: 8GB / 256GB. The same RAM as 8GB / 128GB, with twice the storage again.
  3. Check how big your maps are, and that your map app runs on the unit itself.

More storage, more speed?

Play from 5:19
  1. No. Storage is for what you keep. And more RAM won't fix a weak phone link either.
  2. Pick for how you drive today, and leave a little room for tomorrow. Buying the right Brummstadt once beats outgrowing it and buying twice.

Keeping it quick

Play from 5:58

Ignition on.

  1. Your Brummstadt unit tidies up by itself, so there is no need to close everything every drive.
  2. Now and then, close heavy apps you've finished with, like a map, a video or a camera view. Tap the recent apps button and swipe the app away. Some units also show Clear all.
  3. Not every unit looks the same, so go by the names, not the pictures.
  4. If something feels stuck, give it a proper restart. Turning the key off often just puts the unit to sleep.
  5. Press the little RST hole on the front, gently, with a paper clip. The screen goes dark, the Brummstadt logo comes up, and it starts fresh. It's a restart, not a reset, so your apps stay put.
  6. Keep the unit updated online. Our update video shows every step.
  7. Keep some storage free. If it runs low, clear out old downloads and music you don't play.

Your numbers on the screen

Play from 7:26
  1. Open Settings, then About car device. Your Brummstadt unit shows its own RAM and storage there.
  2. Under Storage you'll see what's used and what's free. Free is always lower than the label, because the system and your apps use some.
  3. Your screen may look a little different. Just look for the words RAM and storage.

Questions from customers

Real questions Brummstadt owners asked us, with the answer.

Why would I need more RAM or storage? What actually gets stored on the unit?

RAM is the desk: everything the unit is working on right now, like the map, the music, the call and the camera. Storage is the cupboard: installed apps, saved maps and your music, kept even when the unit is off. They do different jobs.

If my phone connects with CarPlay, isn't everything stored on my phone anyway?

Your phone does the heavy lifting, and CarPlay or Android Auto downloads stay on the phone. But the unit runs the picture and the wireless link in its own RAM, and apps installed on the unit live in its storage.

See it in the video at 2:22

I'm on a budget and only use CarPlay for maps, music and calls. Is a bigger version worth it?

Then 2GB / 64GB does the job today: your phone does the work, and the unit shows it, wired or wireless. New apps come along and what you need can change, so if you'd rather not outgrow it, the next step up gives you room to grow.

See it in the video at 2:54

Which version do I need for front and rear cameras or a dash cam?

Those extras start at 4GB / 64GB, together with twice the RAM, split screen and a SIM slot (the SIM card isn't included). Every version has a reversing camera input.

See it in the video at 3:41

Does more storage make the unit faster?

No. Storage is for what you keep. RAM is the desk for what the unit is working on, and a bigger desk means fewer pauses when a lot is open. More RAM won't fix a weak phone link either.

See it in the video at 5:19

My unit feels slow. Should I close every app after every drive?

No need: your Brummstadt unit tidies up by itself. Now and then, close heavy apps you've finished with from the recent apps button. If something feels stuck, press the little RST hole on the front gently with a paper clip for a proper restart; turning the key off often just puts the unit to sleep.

See it in the video at 5:58

How much free storage is left on a 64 GB unit?

Free is always lower than the label, because the system and your apps use some. Open Settings, then About car device, and look under Storage: you see what is used and what is free on your own unit.

See it in the video at 7:47

How do I check how much RAM and storage my unit really has?

Open Settings, then About car device, and look for the words RAM and storage. If your numbers look different to your order, send us a question below with your order number.

  16. Jess: So a bigger bench, more pots on the go. A bigger pantry, more on the shelves.
  17. Liam: Exactly. Two different jobs.
  18. Jess: But CarPlay runs off my phone. Why does the unit need RAM at all?
  19. Liam: Your phone does the heavy lifting, and CarPlay or Android Auto downloads stay on the phone. But the unit runs the picture and the wireless link in its own RAM, and apps installed on the unit live in its storage.

  33. Liam: Then eight and one twenty-eight. Twice the RAM and twice the storage of four and sixty-four, so maps, music and apps on the unit all have room.
  34. Liam: And imagine the Big Lap. Months around Australia with a camper, out where the phone has no signal.
  35. Liam: Maps for the whole country right on the unit, and your whole music collection with you.
  36. Jess: So the biggest cupboard.
  37. Liam: Eight and two fifty-six. The same RAM as eight and one twenty-eight, with twice the storage again.
  38. Jess: And check how big your maps are, and that your map app runs on the unit itself.
  39. Jess: So more storage doesn't mean more speed?
  40. Liam: Right. Storage is for what you keep. And more RAM won't fix a weak phone link either.

  49. Jess: So how do I restart it properly?
  50. Liam: Press the little RST hole on the front, gently, with a paper clip. The screen goes dark, the Brummstadt logo comes up, and it starts fresh. It's a restart, not a reset, so your apps stay put.
